vbox guest additions (proprietary version) fail with --currents new kernel config

Has any one else experienced that building the vbox guest additions (on the binary/non-free vbox) on a slackware --current guest (with windows *and* linux as a host) fails now with the new kernel's just released in --current?

If so do you have a workaround?

Thanks.

What error are you getting?

Last time I had a problem with that I went into /usr/src/linux and did `make prepare && make scripts` and then `/etc/rc.d/rc.vbox setup`

AFAIK, using 3.1.4 should work just fine. What version are you trying?

I'm using the latest 3.14 version of the binary/non-free.

The vbox server itself install's fine on --current (and on win xp).

It's the slackware --current as a guest (on a slack host or on a win xp host).

There is no error's given in the terminal of the guest when building the add-ons.

What happens is you get a segfault (and a whole bunch of backtracing) when kdm starts up (or xdm as well).

Is anyone else having this?

Ok, just making sure I understood correctly. The addons build and install (seemingly) fine. But when you try to use them they don't work?

I had the same problem with the very latest kernel update (kernel-huge-2.6.33-x86_64-2). Switching back to the previous version (kernel-huge-2.6.33-x86_64-1) fixed the problem for me.

The problem appears to be a conflict with the virtual box video driver. With the vbox driver and the -2 kernel, my virtual machine would lock hard when I ran startx. Everything worked fine with just the CLI or if I used the vesa driver. Running xorgsetup also caused the machine to lock.

I noticed on the VirtualBox forums that quite a few people are having issues with ver 3.14 and some of the latest kernels. Hopefully, there will be a fix for the video driver to correct this problem.

@pprkut, yes the linuxadditions seem to build fine, but a reboot (as installer suggests) and logging in as root and issue 'telinit 4' borks the machine. Here is output when building linuxadditions:

root@darkstar:~# cat build-notes.txt
Verifying archive integrity... All good.
Uncompressing VirtualBox 3.1.4 Guest Additions for Linux........
VirtualBox Guest Additions installer
Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules
Building the main Guest Additions module ...done.
Building the shared folder support module ...done.
Building the OpenGL support module ...done.
Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done.
Starting the VirtualBox Guest Additions ...done.
Installing the Window System drivers
Installing experimental X.Org Server 1.7 modules ...done.
Setting up the Window System to use the Guest Additions ...done.
You may need to restart the hal service and the Window System (or just restart
the guest system) to enable the Guest Additions.

Installing graphics libraries and desktop services components ...done.

-----------------------------------------------

@Lirey, yes this is what I was thinking.

I noticed this issue since slackware --currents changes on:

Sun Mar 7 21:44:07 UTC 2010
a/kernel-huge-2.6.33-i486-2.txz: Rebuilt.
Adjusted the config to improve kernel module compatibility.
a/kernel-huge-smp-2.6.33_smp-i686-2.txz: Rebuilt.
Adjusted the config to improve kernel module compatibility.
l/libarchive-2.8.0-i486-1.txz: Upgraded.
isolinux/initrd.img: Rebuilt.
kernels/*: Rebuilt.

Well, guess I have to wait til' vbox fixes it then I suppose. I don't know the "diff" in kernel versions or have a backup copy of what that version kernel did/didnt have.

Thanks guys.
usb-and-pxe-installers/usbboot.img: Rebuilt.
