I think a lot of us in the Slackware forum are in the 30-50 range.

I'm also well aware that many of the regulars in *other* forums (like General) are past retirement age.

I'm 26, but I absolutely love old games.

Quake, Doom, UT, Hexen, Heretic - those are a lot of fun! And no DLC's or season passes, just plain games.

Well, I'm strictly mid-range, by that standard. I'll be 44 soon.

I have a gzdoom SlackBuilds that adds an xBRZ scaling patch, that you should try out.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/du...oom.SlackBuild

gzdoom's license is non-commercial and xBRZ's license is GPL (yes, that's a problem), but I'm comfortable with having them as a SlackBuild and a patch.

Also, I'm currently playing a set of DOOM levels called Alien Vendetta. You should really try it, as I'm halfway through (playing with Crispy DOOM, which has crashed a few times) and it's turning out to be one of my best gaming experiences ever. There are 32 levels and every single one is a magnificent work of art. Skill 2 (which the designer recommended in a forum post) is equivalent to DOOM on Skill 4. Skill 3 (which I'm playing on) is equivalent to Plutonia on Skill 4. Skill 4 is for people who want to record replays to show off.

Hey, guys. I don't normally resurrect old threads, but I thought this relevant, since a goodly number of us still play this oldie but goodie. I hadn't played UT2004 in months, but ran into the same problem the OP did in December 2015. Got to poking around in the ChangeLogs for the reason, and came across this:

Quote:
a/aaa_elflibs-14.2-x86_64-35.txz: Rebuilt.
Removed obsolete libraries: libudev.so.0.13.1, libgdbm.so.3.0.0,
libhistory.so.5.2, libjpeg.so.8.0.1, libmpfr.so.4.1.6, libpng14.so.14.18.0,
libreadline.so.5.2, libstdc++.so.5.0.7, libtiff.so.3.9.7,
and libtiffxx.so.3.9.7.
This was part of the mass rebuild, and so I overlooked it initially.

I have uploaded a cxxlibs package (note that this is essentially orbea's solution sans the multilib part, as I am using the 64-bit executable) to take care of this problem. Again, just a heads-up for those who might be interested.

./eschalon_book_1: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Restored libstdc++.so.5.
Thanks, Pat! Much appreciated!

I have removed the cxxlibs package and upgraded aaa_elflibs. UT2004 still runs! Woo-hoo!

Yet another reason why I like Slackware so much: the rapid responsiveness of its BDFL in regards to even the smallest of needs.

Just to be clear on this subject:

My purpose in posting the customized cxxlibs package wasn't to entice Pat to restore libstdc++.so.5 to aaa_elflibs (although it is appreciated), it was merely to solve an issue I was personally facing, and I didn't feel the need to suggest that it be re-introduced just for my sake. I was not sure who else might need to have the older library installed, and so I posted just for those who were running older games like UT2004.

Hrmm, I have the library, but it's 64b, the game doesn't find it, does it need a 32b version?

There are actually two versions of the game executable, one is 32-bit, and the other 64-bit.

ut2004-bin: 32-bit
ut2004-bin-linux-amd64: 64-bit

If you run the latter, it should find the library just fine.
