Using a laptop touchpad mouse.

I just installed Slackware 10.3 on my Toshiba A45 laptop. My problem is that my laptop touchpad mouse does not work. I'm currently using a usb mouse, but I really want to make the touchpad to work. What do I have to do?
I have a few more questions. My usb mouse has 5 buttons (left, right, scroll, back, and forward). Back and Forward buttons don't work right now. What can I do to make them work?
I've been using MDK and Suse, and in suse, there is Yast and in mdk, there is "configure your computer." Is there anything like that in slackware?
Last question. I just tried to install Synergy using rpm, and I got an error message saying that I'm missing some stuff that Synergy requires. In suse and MDK, they asked me if i want to install the missing things and automatically installed from cd/dvd. Does Slackware have something like this?
Sorry for asking too many questions. I kinda like Slackware right now, and I don't want to go back to Suse or mdk. Thank you.

Hi kponenation,

first, there is no Slackware 10.3 right now - did you perhaps install 10.1? :-)

Please specify the Vendor name and Model of your Touchpad and USB mouse.
Then we can see further.

Slackware has nothing like Yast or "configure your computer". You'll perhaps find yourself comfortable with kcontrol if your are using KDE.

Slackware does not generally support RPM Packages (Slackware's package format ist .tgz). Although you can install RPM support, it is unsupported.

Slackware doesn't (in my knowledge) have something to auto-install missing packages, whatever they are (that's one reason why it comes with only 2 CDs)... You have to go and get those packages. Two good ways to find the things you need:

1. If you know what package is missing, go to Linuxpackages.net (3rd party Slack packages) and see if they got it there; If there is no package for 10.1, try out a 10.0 package if existent.

2. If you only got the name of a missing file, go to Slackware's package search page and type in the name of the missing file - if it comes with slackware, this will show you what package you have to install. Works of course only if you didn't a full install :-)

Congrats to choosing Slackware, and don't give up to soon. Seems to me as if you are running through your personal "week of pain" at the moment, but afterwards you'll have learned some new things about linux and be proud of "getting it to work" the way you want.

I guess you'll have some further questions. Feel free to ask them, we'll help you as good as we can :-)

Greetings,

Seppel

I used to have a mouse and a touch pad functioning at the same time on my laptop, I don't have the details to hand but it basically boiled down to adding a second input device in xorg.conf. I can't remember the exact details but I got them from this site. If I remember properly, the USB Mouse uses IMPS/2 as its protocol and the touchpad will be using PS/2.

Use the search facility and see if you can find the answer.

Cheers
Amos

oops... i meant to say 10.1..
The touch pad is integrated to my Toshiba laptop so i'm guessing Toshiba for my touch pad, and my usb mouse is Kensington.
Thank you amos and Seppel.
