KDE seems to be a 'kinda Windows'. Sometimes, just close the current session. That does not interfere with the normal processes of your Slackware box. I have a web/mail/forum server running all the time, but I 'reboot' KDE, and no loss of information.

That is DUMB. All of my critical systems have a UPS. I live in a rural area where power dies everyday. All my Windows systems have it, because just once, after a power failure, everything was gone on my data drive.

Get/use a UPS. Support is builtin to linux, so take advantage of the autoshutdown.
