usb system in Slack 10 /dev/usb

Slack 10 with kernel 2.6.10

Box used as a print server. mail server & file server. printing via CUPS

Suddenly usb printer stops responding.....printer & cables etc all okay.

dmesg reports no significant errors.

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices reports printer as normal.

tail /var/log/messages reports usb connect or unconnect as appropriate

ls /dev | grep usb gives
Code:
crw -------
which is kinda odd because that should be a directory with lp0 and its frineds in it.

Any one know why that's happened or how to fix it?

I just realised that it's kernel related.....I usually run the server on an original 2.4.26 kernel but i must have booted to a 2.6.10 that was there for me to play with. Must be some USb subsystem option somewhere...know which one?

The usual hotplug bit seems missing in dmesg.

I'll try that and see what happens.

D'oh d'oh d'oh

USB printing option not enabled in kernel....simple yet symptoms weren't obvious.

Hi, can I revive this thread? I have a similar situation, but can't
print.

I have slackware 10.1, with
cups-1.1.23-i486-1 and hpijs-1.7-i486-1.

I have all usb related kernel options either y or m in my
2.6.10 kernel.

I have an HP OfficeJet K60xi "All-in-One" printer.

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices --
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=03f0 ProdID=0611 Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=Hewlett-Packard
S: Product=OfficeJet K60xi
S: SerialNumber=SG12AC5075OH
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=00 MxPwr= 2mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=07(print) Sub=01 Prot=03 Driver=usblp
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 8 Ivl=10ms

lsmod shows usblp is loaded

dmesg related output --
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
usb 1-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 3 if 0 alt 0 proto 3 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x0611
usbcore: registered new driver usblp
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: v0.13: USB Printer Device Class driver

I add my printer in the locahost:631 pages, all seems good,
(there were two identical choices for K60xi printer?)

I chose the USB Printer#1 option from the select list.

I try printing a test page or printing from the command line
but I get no printout! cups shows job completed though.

What can I do to find/eliminate the problem? Any help out there?

Thanks,
