USB ports stopped working

Hey,

I've been using Ubuntu linux for quite a while now..I think a little longer than a year, but I got bored of it. I installed slackware before on my notebook but that turned into a major disaster.

Nowadays I have a new pc and I tried installing slackware 2 days ago and it worked, I installed dropline gnome and some standard applications. Using ndiswrapper for my wireless so I installed that as well, but I did no freaky stuff. However, all of a sudden, my usb ports stopped working, I tried reinstalling slackware completely but this simply results in the same error, which is:

(dmesg output (outtake))
usb 2-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 114
usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
hub 2-0:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

And I get that hundreds of times, and when I open the system log and turn on monitor mode it just keeps on giving me those lines, never stops. I'm not a noob in Linux but I sure could use some help here since I haven't found any solution on the web.

Thanks in advance,

Jelke

can you post:

Code:
lspci -vv | grep -A6 USB
dmesg | grep -i usb
lsusb -v
what is plugged into 2-1 ? does it work if plugged in anywhere else?

what is the current state of your slack install? which kernel (uname -a) and is dropline gone now? when you did reinstall did you reformat too?

Smile It's working again :)

I'm sorry for the trouble but it seems like it has fixed itself, because I doubt that those commands gave me did anything else than diagnostics. I went through those diagnostics and noticed no message at all about a seemingly broken usb cable. The usb works fine again . Even though, thanks alot for your effort!

The weirdest part however is that I changed nothing else but doing those diagnostics. And nothing was plugged into any usb cable.

And yes I did format the root while reinstalling (I got /, swap, /home).
Dropline is still installed since I just hate KDE, it's way too busy and bloated, but that's just my opinion

But anyway, thanks again!
Jelke
