This is what I had to do when I wanted to switch from my touchpad to my external USB mouse.
First in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, you'll need to find the line that says something like (I have a touchpad, too, and this is the setting it had)
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
and replace it with
Option "Protocol" "imps/2"
Next, you'll need to re-symlink your /dev/mouse link to point to your USB mouse
as root, you'll need to
rm /dev/mouse -- this removes the sym link
ln -s /dev/input/mice /dev/mouse -- this creates a new sym link
YMMV. Before doing any of this, I would double check that /dev/mouse is actually a sym link pointing to the real mouse device (for me it was /dev/psaux) before removing it.
