usb mouse..help please

ok...i know theres a bunch of threads on this topic..and ive read through a bunch of them but i cant get my logitech usb cordless mouse to work..

im on my laptop right now and the problem is on my desktop

heres what my xf86config file says

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

when i try startx the screen goes black for a few seconds goes to a lighter black for a few seconds then goes back to the terminal and tells me that

xf86openserial: cannot open device /dev/usbmouse
no such file or directory.
mouse1: cannot open input device
preinit failed for input device "mouse1"
no core pointer

fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

and when i have option "device" "/dev/usbmouse" changed to anything else it goes black for a while then goes to fluxbox (i think) and the mouse is in the center of the screen and i cant move it...
