USB modem working on RH but not Slackware

I have a USB modem that I know is linux compatible as I had it working on RH9 with kudzu.

Now that I switched to Slackware 10 I don't seem able to make it work.

I compiled my own kernel 2.6.9 with USB phone module and CONFIG_HOTPLUG=y
As far as I can tell I also have udev installed and this is what swaret reports:
Listing available Packages matching Keyword: udev...
udev-050-i486-1 (169 kB) [Status: NOT INSTALLED (Installed: udev-042-i486-1)]

When I plug the modem in, lsmod shows that the cdc_acm module gets loaded but the module does not seem to bind to the modem.
This is what I see in /proc/bus/usb/devices

T: Bus=01 Lev=00 Prnt=00 Port=00 Cnt=00 Dev#= 1 Spd=12 MxCh= 2
B: Alloc= 0/900 us ( 0%), #Int= 0, #Iso= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=0000 ProdID=0000 Rev= 0.00
S: Product=USB UHCI Root Hub
S: SerialNumber=d400
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=40 MxPwr= 0mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=09(hub ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=hub
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 8 Ivl=255ms
T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=01 Cnt=01 Dev#= 2 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.00 Cls=02(comm.) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS= 8 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=06ea ProdID=0002 Rev= 1.00
S: Manufacturer=Sirius Technologies
S: Product=Roadster II 56 USB
C:* #Ifs= 2 Cfg#= 1 Atr=a0 MxPwr=400mA
I: If#= 1 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=0a(data ) Sub=00 Prot=00 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 16 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 16 Ivl=0ms
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 1 Cls=02(comm.) Sub=02 Prot=01 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 8 Ivl=128ms

I also don't seem any ACM nodes in my /dev directory but I guess that is to be expected with udev.

I am a bit confused with the udev/devfs and I am not sure if I have either of them configured correctly.

What really gets me is that the module doesn't seem to recognise the modem. What am I doing wrong?
