UPS Auto shutdown of multiple pc's - APC Powerchute Network Shutdown vs Apcupsd
 

I'm upgrading my UPS to a SMX1500RM2UC + (1) External battery pack

Rather than worrying about manually shutting I'm wanting to set the UPS (systems) to automatically shut down.

To facilitate this the UPS will also be fitted with a Network Management Card (ap9640)

I'm looking for input on using APC's Powerchute Network Shutdown vs Apcupsd

Initially the question came into existence due to APC's being up to date where as Apcupsd doesn't seem to have been updated since 2018

Practical insight / thoughts / opinions based on first hand experience with either (or both) would be helpful

You can use NUT (slackbuild)

I've looked at NUT, my interface card isn't listed as being supported, nor is the UPS

This would be in my opinion only experimental at best which I'd like to avoid on UPS hardware costing close to 2k USD.
Not to mention the hardware that will be connected to it.

I do have it bookmarked for a revisit in the future

If NUT not support Network Management Card (ap9640), maybe possible use USB connection to near resides server (on which you install NUT server).

The UPS isn't listed as supported either.

While it "might" be true that I "might" be able to get it to work using the USB port on the UPS, this would negate the reason I spent 300.00(USD) for the network interface card.

I have multiple systems that need to be controlled making USB a non-starter

NUT (at this current time) doesn't appear to fit my needs

I don't shutdown across my network. I do use apcupsd for shutdown on each PC, right now only one, I have three UPS's all are Back-UPS CS 650's, works.

I can suggest using apcupsd, i'm using it on every APC ups model, from the smaller 500VA back-ups to the bigger Smart 3kVA.
It just works, you can attach it both by using usb or via network. other devices can use apcupsd in slave mode to fetch the ups status from the master and shutdown properly, too.

Just a note in case anyone else is interested. The APC Powerchute Network Shutdown software seems to be working with no problem on Slackware 15.0 (64) and 14.1 (32)
