upgrading slack from 13.1 to 13.37

Hi. I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure.

- In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:
Code:
upgradepkg --install-new *.t?z
What does --install-new mean? Pkgs I have no installed on my 13.1 will be installed on the 13.37 upgrade? For example, I did not installed KDE on 13.1. Will be installed when upgrade?

- What about third party pkgs? Slacky, SlackBuilds.org, compiled by myself. Should I remove them before upgrading slack?

Thanks a lot.

The --install-new option will make upgradpkg install packages that are not currently installed. This is done so new, required packages are also installed. If you want to leave KDE out, then skip the kde and kdei directories when you issue the command. As for 3rd party packages, you can leave them there...

thanks for your answer. i'll do that with kde path. unfortunatelly install new option will install packages that ive manually removed, like wireless and few things that never use.

I followed the UPGRADE.TXT instructions pretty slavishly and have so far upgraded two of my three machines succesfully from 13.1 t0 13.37. No real problems. I put all the new slackware packages in their traditional directories on the hard drives rather than running from CDs. To avoid all the KDE internationalisation stuff installing I just did not include that folder (I wanted KDE itself, and then manually installed the internationalisation packages that I did want later).

Thanks to the whole team for both 13.37 and the very clear upgrade instructions.

I've upgraded my server (homeserver) with slackpkg without any problems. Packages from slackbuilds etc. I've blacklisted so they won't be removed.

Back in the days I would painstakingly go through every section and uncheck what I did not want installed; ridiculously time consuming! Nowadays I install everything except the games and then I weed out what I don't want. What you could do is go ahead with the upgrade, but this time around make note of what you're removing so for the next upgrade it would be easier to remove stuff you don't use.

Totally agree. Most time consuming was deciding if every app is important or not for the system, no matter if I need it

Thats a good option. The upgrade works with tagfiles?

Unfortunately the upgrade process does not use tagfiles, at least not that I'm aware of. I only mentioned making note of packages you remove now so that for the next upgrade you know right off the bat what to remove...

Obsolete and discontinued packages.
Does the list mentioned in stept 4 of UPGRADE.TXT contain all the packages that will become obsolete for 13.37? Or there are more?

Hope not have to make a check for every pkg (hell itself)

I think everything in that list is all that becomes obsolete for 13.37. You can double check to make sure by going into /var/log/packages and looking at the dates for all the files in there. Anything listed not with the date of when you performed the upgrade to 13.37 are packages left over from 13.1.

I've upgraded slack suscessfully! Just followed de UPGRADE.TXT steps. It's so easy! No problems, no conflicts found for now, even with third party packages. Now I have to recompile my new kernel, maybe upgrade some slacky/SBo packages.

Thanks for all your answers.
