Upgrading packages

Can I boot from the Slackware 10.1 cd 1 and upgrade ALL packages (I have Slack 10.0 installed) by doing a chroot to my hda1 and using upgradepkg?

This method worked for 1 package-the iptables. I compiled a 2.4.29 kernel and want to keep that.

I would keep the kernel config and recompile after a clean install. Glibc comes to mind as being a real problem on upgrades and breaking things. Your old kernel modules will have compiled under an older version possibly of glib, then wreak havoc on the system.
