upgrading mysql carefully?


I have the slackware package of mysql installed and running the DB server for my web site, but the 9.1 package of slackware comes with 4.0.15a. now slacware current has 4.0.18.

how do I upgade mysql without destroying my configuration and databases?

I'd suggest simply backing up your files in your current database and, if need be, restoring them after your upgrade.

One way to do this might be to use mysqldump.

EXAMPLE:
mysqldump --opt -u USER -p PASSWORD --all-databases > all.sql

Please refer to your system documentation for details on your alternatives, and for the exact syntax for doing a backup and corresponding restore.

Depending on how "mission critical" this data is, you might also consider doing a "pilot upgrade" on a test system before updating your production system.
