Upgrading from 9.0 to 9.1 - how to?

Hi there,

I'm relatively new to Linux (although I found out a little bit about using it by now) and to Slackware (although I already like it pretty much ;-).
Am I able to just install Slackware 9.1 over my existing 9.0 or do I have to clean my Slack partition (and recompile/reinstall all stuff), or is there any "official" (or still different) way to upgrade?

Best thanks for your replies!

Seppel

I have recently had success moving from 9.0 to current using swaret. Check out www.swaret.org. If you have the bandwidth and the drive space, it seems to be a good solution. You might also want to take a look at slapt-get at http://software.jaos.org/.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't want to upgrade it this way.... Just want to know if there is any problem when over-installing 9.1 over 9.0 ('cause I compiled and installed some software and I want to keep it instead of re-doing all the work.... :-)

It is possible to exclude items from the upgrade with swaret, so if the upgrade would normally change the application you have compiled yourself you could exclude it.

Swaret also has the option to upgrade from CDROM, so you wouldn't necessarily need the bandwidth or drive space. I didn't mention this in my earlier post because I didn't use this option, and frankly, I forgot it was available.

One problem you are likely to have by installing 9.1 over 9.0 is that such an upgrade would likely change some of the configuration files in /etc. Before you do the upgrade, you should back up /etc, /var. /home and any other directory where you have made changes you'd like to keep. You probably knew that already though, so I will just keep quiet now and wait for a more experienced user to answer your question. (It has been a long time since I have done a Slackware upgrade from CDROM.)

Thanks again, perhaps I'll try and see what changed and what needs to be rebuilt.

Greetings from Aix-la-Chapelle (Aachen) to "Alt-Heidelberg" ;-)
