Upgrade KDE how?

Hello.

I'm running Slackware 9.1 and I have a slight problem. Occasionally while running some KDE apps (Kate, KDevelop, Control Center, etc...), the application crashes and I get a warning message. This problem was resolved on my RedHat system by simply updating the KDE packages. This wasn't hard (rpm -Uvh <package.name>) but now with Slackware I've gone chicken. The thing is, I've got the system set up just how I want it and I'm afraid I'll screw it up if I try to fix these problems by upgrading. On the other hand, I hate having to retype all my code each time an app crashes.

Now I've heard of 'swaret' and aloso of 'upgradepkg'.

Which of these is the least painful for upgrading KDE's base package?

Thanks in advance.

Download the upgraded packages you need and place them in /some/dir . Then as root in console mode go to /some/dir and issue the command 'upgradepkg *.tgz' . The installer will upgrade the existing version of the packages with the ones you downloaded and placed in /some/dir .

Well, I had problems with the upgrade to 3.1.5 on current so I went straight to 3.2 RC1. Seems to be working fine for me. There are binaries accessible via the kde.org download site for slack 9.1. Follow the instructions in the README there and you should be fine. Uninstall all related KDE packages (including arts, qt, kdevelop, koffice) , install the new ones. I always out of habit install 1) arts, 2) qt 3) kdelibs, 4) kdebase, and then the rest of the kde* packages.

BTW, my problem with 3.1.5 was related to the kdemultimedia package only IIRC.

Thanks rotvogel.

You're post worked flawlessly!
The problems are gone! No more crashing!
I'm so relieved it worked on the first try, I was afraid I'd have to perform a clean install if I screwed up.

Thanks again!
