Updating realy Old custom Kernel

Hi! We have an old Slackware machine that acts as a firewall, router, gateway, etc.. It is Slackware 8.0 with a custom 2.4.5 Linux kernel.
We want to update our system to 2.4.37 or something like that to use new features like file systems, etc..
The question is: should we start with the old 2.4.5 .config file for "make menuconfig" or should we start a fresh one? If we start with the old .config, we lose any functionality (or configuration capability) of the new kernel?

Thanks in advance.

Martin.

Look at "make oldconfig" with the old version of the kernel config and new source. Googleing "make oldconfig" should give more information.
