Updating glib

Ok, before I mess up again, I would like to know how I should go about updating glib. It needs to be updated to run the new version of Gaim. When I run pkgtool, I have the following glib related packages (keep in mind this is after a fresh install):

glib-1.2.10-i386-1 (glib (library of C routines)
glibc-2.2.5-i386-2 (glibc (GNU C libraries)
glibc-i18n-2.2.5-i386- (glibc-i18n (local files from glibc)
glibc-solibs-2.2.5-i38 (glibc-solibs (shared GNU C libraries)
glibc-zoneinfo-2.2.5-i (glibc-zoneinfo (time zone database)

Also, is it generally a good idea when one is updating a package to uninstall the older version, and then install the newer version?

Thanks in advance.

Just a suggestion but get the entire GTK+2.2 and save yourself a lot of headaches. I compiled all mine from source Just finished Gaim without any errors. I didn't uninstall anything.
