Updating entire system?
 

I was just wondering what people feel is the best/most reliable way of updating all packages on a slackware system. There are many tools out there, swaret, slackpkg, rsync, slapt-get... I have heard pros and cons of both, and then there are many people who are against automatic updates such as this all together. I was just wondering what people feel about all of these, what they use, and how well it works.

I have used swaret to upgrade 9.0 to 9.1 and then to 10 without any problems although some people have said they have had minor problems after running upgrades.

Well, swaret is not part of the Slackware distribution and Evolution isn't either.

To upgrade, look at the root dir of the installation CD and read the upgrade HOWTO (UPGRADE.TXT).

Well I did upgraded my system from 10 to current using swaret.

What I did was, swaret --update
swaret --get au

Then when down to run level 1 (single user mode). And did swaret --upgrade.

Everything seems to be ok accept for my gnome. Which is still usable. udev kinda sucks with 2.6.9 kernel. So I went back to 2.6.7 for now.

CFDISK is very healthy programm, from time to time:scratch:

You only need cfdisk if you are changing your partitions. The slack install will let you format a partition before installing.

The most reliable way to upgrade from one release to another is as rotvogel stated. To update to current or keep up with patches, the most reliable way is to read the change logs, download the patches with wget. There will be instructions at times in the change logs that you need to follow that swaret or other auto updaters will not know about.

I just updated all of my packages with SlackGrade, seems to have worked pretty well
