now i use slackware10.2,I update kernel to 2.6 but after make completed reboot it display:
kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on Unkonw-block(8,5)
now I want use my old kernel(2.4) login in system to remake kernel but my old kernel have the error too.so I can't login in my system to make kernel again
zhuningwII it sounds like you did NOT properly edit your lilo.conf file and run "lilo" as root before rebooting, OR, you did not properly backup your old kernels /boot items, or you totally did something wrong with your kernel install.
can you post exactly what you did.
1. make your own 2.6 kernel or use slackware's testing kernel.
2. what steps did you take after #1 here, exactly what commands to back up your prior /boot section and lilo file changes and boot record changes.
You need to go to the /boot directory and remove all of the extra files, mostly the initrd file, that was created at the time of installing your 2.6 kernel. Then point lilo to the 2.4 kernel again, run lilo, and reboot. Should fix it for you.
Yes, I did forget the system was unbootable. You will need to boot from disk 1, mkdir for a mount point and mount your hard drive. Sorry I forgot that part...
