I would suspect your graphics card in this case. I believe that is a dual monitor card. Do you have two monitors attached? I'm only guessing here, but I would try another card if you have one.
I am wondering whether there may be an issue with your monitor. When X is started it queries the EDID in your monitor and will only offer resolutions that the monitor says it can support.
Please post the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and also the contents of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Also, have you checked the contents of /etc/X11/? I had a problem with a system (that I had upgraded many times) which still had a stale xf86config file in place that was being read when X started.
The monitor is an "NEC MultiSync XE21" and displays console framebuffers from boot at 1280x1024. I use this same monitor (via mechanical KVM) for other systems which so far are having no difficulty using it at that same resolution, although at the momnent only one is using GUI framebuffers at that resolution (the one using an o/s from ::shudder:: Redmond).
I have always had serious doubts whether this monitor is even capable of responding to queries of any sort. The horizontal and vertical sync rates (Hsync: 31 - 69 ; Vsync: 55 - 120) have never been properly detected by any operating system or application and have always required that I input those manually. In the past, X had a method for doing just that.
"/etc/X11" was one of the first directories I examined. I see nothing out of place there.

xorg.conf
These are the contents after an automated configuration yesterday. Excerpts of the previous config follow.
xorg.conf.backup
These are the pertinent entries from the config I had been using up to now.
The "Monitor section" was (I think) the work of "xorgsetup" from X as supplied by the previous (13.0) Slack release. The "Screen" section had to be modified to include the 1280x1024 resolutions.
Initially I neglected to corect the "mode" entries in the "Screen" section of xorg.conf
Without defining the modes the GUI would start at 1680x1050 resolution, which is somewhat distorted on this 4:3 CRT.
Modifying the display resolution for each session was a minor inconvenience, however I also depend on being able to swithch out to a true console (Alt+Ctrl+Fn).
It appears that X must initialise with the same resolution (and colour depth ?) as are being used for the console framebuffers, otherwise the display may be hopelessly and possibly dangerously (for the CRT) thrashed.
It was necessary to restore the "Screen" section as described above.
Note these are all 4:3, not 16:9 widescreen aspects.
