Unable to post to newsgroups

I have tried using a range of newsreaders on Slack 9.0 (Pan, KNode, Mozilla) and am still unable to post anything to newsgroups. I can read news just fine but given the range of readers I have attempted to use to post the one commonality is my system.
I can send and receive email just fine, so my email settings are fine. I am using a standalone box behind an iptables firewall using dial-up. My ISP assures me that their settings are fine and I have used their info to set up each of the readers but still to no avail.
I am not even sure where to begin to hunt down info on this, so am asking for some clues or suggestions as to where to begin to resolve this.

It looks there's something wrng with your settings. Maybe choose one news program and describe (in detail) what you did (what you have in which box).
