Ultra slow browsing
Hello everyone!
I have just installed Slackware 10 with kde. For web browsing i use Firefox 1.0.4. I access the internet using dialup with a 56K external modem. Does anybody have a clue why my browsing speed is a lot slower in Slackware than my browsing speed in windows??? I tried downloading a simple txt file and firefox's download manager showed me the lightning fast speed of 0.9Kbps! Newbie in distress! Please reply! |
what are you using to connect to the net with?
|
Are you behind a Firewall?

in my experience, a slow browsing experience is often a symptom of trouble resolving domain names into ip addresses. here's a simple experiment:
open a terminal like xterm. first ping a normal address like this: ping www.google.com then ping google's ip address (if i'm not mistaken the previous ping should list the ip address you're pinging) like this: ping 72.220.58.100 if you don't know google's ip, you can look it up with dig www.google.com i believe. so anyway, see if there's a difference in how long the pings take. |
Is it your browsing that is slow or only downloading files? The built in download manager in Firefox sucks. Get something like the Flashgot extension and use a third party download manager like Kget.

Did you read your e-Mail from Pat after installing Slack?
It states that you need to enable /etc/rc.d/rc.serial in /etc/rc.d/rc.S, and edit /etc/serial.conf ... Otherwise you're connecting at 9600. Cheers, Tink |
YES! THAT WAS IT!
