udev / usb / hotplug

I've looked around, but haven't really found any straight answers.

In slackware 10.2 (Kernel 2.6.15 / udev 71 )(with minimal configuration changes), In order to boot using a USB mouse & a USB keyboard, does rc.hotplug AND/OR rc.udev have to be accessed?

Should I have one or the other? Must both be executable?

Second note: Using udev, isn't the /dev directory supposed to be less populated, only with the devices that are currently being used? Mine has way too many entries. (Actually, it has less entries, it just has way too many pty & tty entries)

Since you are using 2.6.15+ it's recommended to have them both installed AND executable. Just having rc.hotplug should probably work, but udev won't hurt.

There was a way to limit the number of pty/tty entries created by udev, but I can't seem to find it...
Anyway, these should not hurt you at all.

I think you have to switch off the udev devices tarball... That leaves just the devices you use IIRC. Don't have any idea anymore where to change that setting.

I'm asking here with the intention of learning from your experience

I was just wondering if you can explain why you posted this question. Do you have a problem with USB mouse and USB keyboard detection in slackware 10.2? The reason that I ask this is because I have one pc that has USB keyboard and USB mouse and I guess I must be lucky because I never ran into an issue of this kind. Does that happen for you? Is this a possible issue that I might run into one day loading on a different pc with USB/mouse/key? Thank you.

No, i never really ran into detection issues. I was more wondering because I heard rumors (this forum maybe) that say that udev is all you need. I tried taking off rc.hotplug, but had to lnx-bbc it and change it back. I thought maybe there was some magic way that you didn't need it.

I just kinda have this idea that the fewer things that are running, the better, so I was checking to see what is actually required.

Other than that, my system really does work fine.

Edit: It all just came from confusion. I knew that 2.6 used udev, but I hadn't had it executable. And as I was looking inside, rc.udev said that is wasn't needed, and rc.hotplug said stuff about running udev and this and that. I just needed some clarification.

And furthermore, my only large issue with USB keyboard was figuring out which script to run to enable it.
