Two odd issues with network and Firefox, unknown IP address
 

Hello Everyone,

This is more of an annoyance than anything else. A few weeks ago, my 8 year old Belkin router gave up the ghost and I had to replace it. After setting the new one up with WPA and such for all my machines, everything works fine except with my Slackware -current. When I boot Slack, everything works fine, but when the network is brought up, it broadcasts for an IP address, times out then says something to the effect:

This IP address has nothing to do with my home network. All of my machines receive DHCP address of 192.168.1.3X. As soon as I am fully booted to runlevel 3, I restart the network and it connects just fine with an appropriate IP address. Can't figure out where this IP address comes from, but in any case it does not get connected to my network until I restart the network (/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart). Anyone know how to correct this?

In Firefox (and this only relates to LQ) I can no longer get it to remember my password to keep me signed in. If I open another tab or visit another page, I am signed out and must sign in again. This really annoying when I want to visit other forums on LQ. It even signs me out if I just leave the Slackware forum and visit another forum, such as the Fedora forum. But I should point out that this is not just in Slackware, it occurs on other machines with other distros, so it is either an issue with LQ or Firefox (I believe Firefox because I also use opera and it does not occur there. I was really just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this. I realize that it is hardly likely to have anything to do with the new router, but the problem started at the same time I installed the new router.

The 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is reserved and normally assigned upon a failed DHCP request.

When you got the new router did you set it up with the same SSID and Key?

If so, you may need to delete and recreate the entry on the linuux box.

Afraid I can't help with the Firefox issue.

Hello, never say never. Thank you that clears it up. I used a different SSID but the same key. I did delete and re-enter the information in inet1, but still have the issue. At least now I understand where that IP address comes from.

Just try wicd. It's in the /extra directory in the installation disc.

The firefox issue has to do with an lq update. Delete your lq cookies and try again.

Glad you found a solution. The Thread Tools menu has an option to mark the thread SOLVED.
