turn off daemons

hi!

I did a full install of slackware 9.0. i was told that it is better to turn off all the unwanted daemons so taht the system can be more secure...

how to list all the daemons i'm running at the background and foremostly how to turn them off?

i only use slackware to surf net and do some php scripting . any ideas which daemons could be turned off safely? (like sendmail, newsserver, etc etc?)

thx....

ps aux

This should list your daemons, to shut them off, look into /etc/rc.d and find which script is starting them. Comment the lines referring to that daemon, OR chmod 000 the rc file if nothing in there is what you want (rc.sendmail maybe).

I'd turn off:
sendmail/postfix
apache
ssh
nfs
samba
mysql (unless your PHP scripts need it)

Cool

It might be an idea to turn off finger and ping as well, unless you need them (in which case you could always start them up manually). Also, be sure to set up a nice IPTables firewall.

Also, as root, open up /etc/inetd.conf .. Comment out any unwanted services then at the console, do "ps ax | grep inetd" .. once you have the PID, type "kill -HUP <pid of inetd>" .. that should restart it and re-read inetd.conf with the new changes made.
