Trying to install latest open source ATI drivers. Failing (specifically dri)

I'm trying to install the latest open source ATI drivers on my laptop running Slackware 12.0 using an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 (R500 based). The reason is that I had enough of the shenanigans fglrx was pulling on me (major display corruption in XFCE, slow scrolling in Firefox, won't even build on kernels 2.6.24.4 and higher even with the latest release) and ever since May this year I have heard that R500 based cards gained 3D (and maybe XV) support via the latest open source ati driver package (not radeonhd). Unfortunately I have had nothing but problems trying to get the driver to work, despite that everthing compiles successfully.

What I've done so far was compile and install the latest git versions of mesa (even the dri drivers), libdrm, and xf86-video-ati. Like I stated in the last paragraph, everything compiles with success and installation is not a problem. I can start x successfully with the ati driver and even execute some simple tricks like rotating the screen with xrandr. What I cannot do is get DRI enabled, therefore 2D rendering is slow, 3D software is very slow (glxgears runs at a pathetic ~250-300fps), and software that depends on AIGLX cannot run at all. For reference, here are the outputs from glxinfo

For the record, I am using kernel 2.6.24.4 with agpgart compiled in and modules drm and radeon (and yes, I do make sure that the modules drm and radeon are running before starting Xorg). I'm not willing to take the easy way out and just start over with Slackware 12.1, although this option is on the table if and only if there is no way to get dri to work on my computer.

Also, is the mesa, drm, xf86 driver compilation enough? In other words, do I also need to recompile Xorg (using version 1.4.0.90) and/or upgrade the kernel? I have to admit, this is my first time installing and dealing with new open source graphics drivers. Thank you greatly in advance for anybody that can help. :)

XavierP 06-29-2008 05:03 PM

Moved to Slackware as requested.

Yes, you're supposed to. Read the dependencies here:
http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building

Also, the R500 driver from what I understand isn't much more than the R300 one, if it even works that well.

GushpinBob 06-29-2008 05:49 PM

Thank you for your quick response, the3dfxdude. Would I still need to upgrade the kernel in my system? Also, I have always been afraid of compiling Xorg because it seems so... well, daunting without some kind of build script or something. Could I use Patrick's x11.slackbuild for the latest release of xserver (1.4.2) or would that cause too many problems?

You don't need to recompile the kernel. I've found that the instructions on there are sufficient enough to get my RS480 running with 3D. I make my own slackware packages based on the instructions. Now you probably should rebuild more than that, as I've seen errors with missing symbols. But I'm not in a hurry to do the whole x11.slackbuild either. I will probably wait until slackware-current gets updated.

GushpinBob 07-10-2008 05:29 PM

Well, I've waited and finally updated xorg-server 1.4.2 (and other necessary pakages) and I have rebuilt the libdrm, mesa (with the dri drivers), and xf86-video-ati and I still cannot get dri to enable. Anybody have any solutions? I'm nearly at the end of my rope here.

C-Sniper 07-10-2008 05:39 PM

have you tried making the package with the ATI-installer? try doing that and installing the package with the pkgtools. That is what i had to do in order to get it to work for my Radeon Xpress 200M.

GushpinBob 07-10-2008 05:42 PM

ATI Installer? We're talking about the open-source driver, right?

I just want to say that I am using the open-source ati driver and have used src2pkg to create an installable package.

C-Sniper 07-10-2008 06:41 PM

ATI has a proprietary driver out that works quite well. I know that for my card i have to use the proprietary drive otherwise i get very weird problems with the display.

GushpinBob 07-10-2008 07:09 PM

Thanks for your recommendation, but if you read my first post I clearly state that I am trying to move away from fglrx, ATI's proprietary driver. Now yes, I have gotten dri to work on fglrx, hell I've gotten compiz to run on fglrx in the past, but many things were still broken like Xv, slow scrolling in Firefox, corrupted display issues in XFCE, and suspend/resume support. I haven't had any of those problems with the exception of enabling DRI (well, suspend too but that's for another thread) when moving to the latest open source ATI Xorg driver. For now, I'm done with the proprietary driver.

the3dfxdude 07-10-2008 08:29 PM

Did you replace the packages? This is what I currently have on my system:

xf86-video-ati-20080708-i686-1
xf86vidmodeproto-20080526-noarch-1
dri2proto-20080526-noarch-1
libXmu-20080526-i686-1
libXxf86vm-20080526-i686-1
mesa-20080526-i686-1
libdrm-20080526-i686-1
glproto-1.4.9-noarch-1 (official)
xorg-server-1.4.2-i486-1 (official)

I pulled this stuff from from git at freedesktop.org except the official packages. I don't have elaborate build scripts for these yet. Mesa actually was build not according to the link I posted before. The build instructions may be outdated as I have not got 3D using the old instructions anymore. They used to work. So maybe I'll run through the steps again and make some build scripts for you.

My packages work on Rv280 and RS480 (Xpress 200 M) both just fine. Oh, there might be an issue with your R500 w/3D too still. I don't know if that for sure got merged into the main mesa branch.

GushpinBob 07-10-2008 09:14 PM

Thanks for your response, 3Dfxdude :). It looks like that I do need to install/upgrade some of the software you've mentioned in that list. I'll try that and report back during this weekend. Would I need to compile and install those packages in a certain order or could I install them in the order as you have them in that list?

I've heard that 3D is working fine with the R500 based cards for a couple of months now when using the ati driver whereas the RadeonHD driver just implement 2d acceleration.

the3dfxdude 07-10-2008 09:42 PM

The order is probably important. Looking at what I did, I might have done more than necessary. I will get you steps so you can try on your own.

the3dfxdude 07-11-2008 12:19 AM

I went through redoing the packages.

I have these official slack packages now:
xorg-server-1.4.2-i486-1
xf86vidmodeproto-2.2.2-noarch-1
libXmu-1.0.4-i486-1
glproto-1.4.9-noarch-1

This one I have upgraded, but it you might get by with the official package:
libXxf86vm-1.0.2-i686-1

New packages, listed in order I installed them:
xf86-video-ati-20080708-i686-1
libXxf86vm-1.0.2-i686-1
dri2proto-1.1-norarch-1
libdrm-20080710-i686-2
mesa-20080710-i686-2
And the drm and radeon kernel modules

The first 4 simply take a
./configure --prefix=/usr && make
to build them and do a make install into a temp directory, then a makepkg to make the package.

The last two, mesa and the kernel modules I did this:

In the mesa build directory:
Code:

./configure --prefix=/usr --with-dri-drivers="r200,r300,swrast" --with-dri-driverdir=/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri
gmake
mkdir -p /tmp/dest/usr/bin
make install DESTDIR=/tmp/dest
cp progs/xdemos/{glxcontexts,glxdemo,glxgears,glxgears_fbconfig,glxgears_pixmap,glxheads,glxinfo,glxpbdemo,glxpixmap,glthreads} /tmp/dest/usr/bin

And in the libdrm directory to build the modules:
Code:

cd linux-core
make DRM_MODULES="radeon"
cp *.ko /lib/modules/2.6.26-rc8/kernel/drivers/char/drm
depmod -a
rmmod radeon
rmmod drm
modprobe radeon

You need the kernel source tree configured to your kernel to build the modules.

GushpinBob 07-11-2008 01:17 AM

Thank you kindly for your time to show me how to install these packages. I will report back with the results during sometime this weekend.

GushpinBob 07-13-2008 02:17 PM

Well, I followed exactly what you said and I'm still unable to get dri working. I've tried the latest xf86-video-ati driver from git and I couldn't even get Xorg to start at all :( while getting the error message "(EE) No devices detected". I tried using an older git release from June 28, 2008, but even when Xorg started I still could not get DRI to work. I did another LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo and this is what I got as an error:

Code:

libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 6.9.0 r300 (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so: undefined symbol: _glapi_Dispatch)
libGL error: unable to load driver: r300_dri.so

Also, ever since I been compiling mesa on my own, I've been getting segfaults on ALL of the programs contained within the progs/xdemos directory that come with mesa.

GushpinBob 07-13-2008 06:27 PM

I think I have found a solution

I did a bit of a googling on the error messages glxinfo was spitting out and found this: http://lists.alioth.debian.org/piper...ly/000891.html

When typing LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libGL.so" startx in the command line, I finally get DRI up and running :D. No AIGLX yet:scratch:, though I'll look into that later. Using the official 6.9.0 xf86-video-ati driver ATM but the latest git version seems to be having problems right now so I'll check it out in a couple of days.

the3dfxdude 07-13-2008 08:16 PM

I'm a bit concerned with your environment. I get this for LIBGL_VERBOSE=verbose glxinfo:

libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 5.3.0 r300 (screen 0)

You didn't follow my instructions exactly as the modules you have are being found in /usr/lib/dri/r300_dri.so, and slackware doesn't default there. /usr/lib/modules/dri is correct for slackware and I install there.

And rereading you are using slackware 12.0 no? And I'm seeing you are using slackware current packages. It could part of your problem of seg faulting.

GushpinBob 07-13-2008 09:17 PM

You did read my next post, right? Typing 'LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib/libGL.so" startx' enabled DRI (oops, forgot to mention that the segfaults went away with this command). Yes, I did follow your instructions as explicitly stated in the few posts above (especially the mesa configuration stage) and yes, the modules are installed in /usr/lib/modules/dri (/usr/lib/dri was an automatically created link to /usr/lib/modules/dri. I have no idea why the modules are being searched in the /usr/lib/dri directory though).

Yes, I am using Slackware 12.0, and yes, there are some packages that are from current e.g. xorg-server-1.4.2. To reiterate, the segfaulting goes away when using the LD_PRELOAD variable.

the3dfxdude 07-13-2008 09:34 PM

I understand that the PRELOAD fixes the linkage, but I'm concerned with mixing the old packages with the newer ones. And I don't have to do it on my system. You might want to upgrade, because this is very new stuff you are wanting to run.

As for AIGLX, you might have to rebuild your xserver using the mesa git and probably using the git xserver too. I haven't bothered because I don't use it.
