Trying to get remote sound with KDE 3.4.2

Hi All,

I am trying to get remote sound working as well. My wifes laptop is currently acting as a thin client (wireless pcmcia card, so ltsp is not an option). I can login to my pc with the remote session option of kdm but whatever I try, I can not get remote sound.

I did:
enable network sound in Control Center
copy:
GlobalComm=Arts::X11GlobalComm
in $HOME/.mcoprc file on the laptop (as well as on my pc)

What else did I notice:
when I start on laptop (after switching to runlevel 3):
X -query mypc
I get a black screen with a cursor
when I start
X -query "myip"
it works also when logging in as a user. I did this because I am not sure how artsd on laptop is started from kdm.

On laptop I see no artsd proces running when remotely logged in, but I do see it on the server.
When I ssh from server to laptop while laptop is running a remote session I cannot start artsd, it responds:
"X11GlobalComm: Can't connect to the XServer - Initial references won't work.
bad md5 secret-cookie obtained from Arts::X11GlobalComm - replacing it"

I have googled for quite a while but did not find any clues.

Did anyone have succes in getting remote sound? BTW both systems run slackware 10.2, pretty default setup and with KDM and runlevel 4

Maarten

I never did that so i can only give you some suggestions.
Well i think enabling artsd by default (which is the case in KDE) is a bad idea.
I don't think you can forward sound with X.
You can use some streaming program like VLC or mplayer if you want to forward video sound.
Maybe jack can do it.
Finally i'm almost sure artsd can do it too if you start it with the right option. Then you'll have to be sure that your applications use artsd.
