Trying Slackware after years away

After years of being away I want to give Slackware another try. I will be using version 8.0.

My question regards support for two key items on my machine: the 3Com 3C905C-TX-M network card and Promise Ultra-66 EIDE PCI controller card. Does Slackware 8 support these two devices out of the box?

Thanks!

don't know about the Promise Ultra, but the 3Com card is supported.

It probably wouldn't be so much of Slack supporting the Promise controller but the kernel itself I would think. Slack8 comes with both 2.2.19 and 2.4.5.

comments at the LHD indicate it works fine with 2.4.x kernels and is do-able with the 2.2.x series. sooo... based on third hand info, you should be fine.

If you use the 2.4 kernel it will be transparently supported. If you use the 2.2 kernel you will need to pass in memory addresses to the kernel so it knows where to find the card. Check out the howto on the Ultra33 card, the parameters are the same.

Thanks to everyone. I ended up making a pair of floppies with the boot floppy being based on the 2.4 kernel and I installed fine. Now I just need to get reintroduced to Slackware Linux, as I have grown very used to NetBSD.

Thanks again.
