Trouble saving ALSAMIXER settings..yada yada

Hi folks. After installing five different distros, I've settled on slack. I like it a lot. However, I'm fully aware that the sound is muted by default (how goofy is that?) and one must go into alsamixer (or another similar app) in order to set the volume. Here is the problem. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to set this permanently. The command 'alsactl store' is not found after hitting esc after setting the volume in alsamixer. Is there another way to save the settings permanently?

Also, I see a lot of posts concerning multiple sound apps. As I understand it, Alsa is supposed to act as a software mixer in order to allow multiple apps to use the sound device yet many of us cannot do this. Is there something we are missing when setting up Alsa?

Thanx in advance!

Came up with this when i attempted writing out the path:

Cannot open /etc/asound.state for writing

I assume this is a permission thing but I'm not too sure how to set it properly.
