Trouble mounting CD-Rom

I have just installed Slack10 and am in process of tweaking/configuring system.
I have 2 hard drive system with WinXP on hda and Slack on hdb. I can play CD's from root but not under user. I am showing it mounting under /dev/hdc (instead of /dev/cdrom)
It shows my /dev/cdrom in KDE Info Center and when I mount it, it brings up /dev/hdc and will not play or eject even. Here is my /etc/fstab
/dev/hdb1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb2 / reiserfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hda1 /fat-c vfat defaults 1 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,user,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0

Can anyone help? Thanks!!

fstab looks fine. I'm assuming that when you click the CD ROM Device icon on the K desktop you're recieving that error?

You may need to right click your icon, choose properties and manually edit the device. I'm not infront of my Slack box right now so I can't do a real walk through.

Also a problem on my box has been that even after I make the necessery changes to fstab a regular user still cannot mount the cd rom. I just join my user to whatever group the cdrom belongs to (disk or cdrom) and it works fine. In fact I join my user to sys (solves some sound problems) disk and cdrom (mounting problems). I figure this is better than changeing permissions on the devices but I may well be wrong.

If anyone has an opinion on that I'd like to hear it.

Hope it helps.

check permissions on /dev/cdrom and the device it points to (in this case, I guess /dev/hdc)

EDIT: or use the group solution wingnut posted
