Trouble installing debian packages

The most important questions is, how are you trying to install the Debian packages?

The only thing more important than that question, is "why are you trying to install Debian packages on Slackware"?

Please help. I can't install an RPM on my Windows 98 system.

I think you missed the inherent sarcasm in rworkman's post :D

This is probably why Slackware users are labelled 'elitist'. ;)

In short (because I don't have much time): you can't and shouldn't install Debain (.deb) packages in Slackware -- at least not with extra steps. What application are you trying to install? It is likely available somewhere else as a Slackware .tgz package or as a SlackBuild. Installing .deb or .rpm packages in Slackware can make things messy (since they were created for other distributions that may do things differently than Slackware), and they may not even work because of that. If you *have* to use that package, then I can give you some information about getting .deb packages to work in Slackware; however, I don't have a single .deb or .rpm package on my Slackware installation and never will. It would be beneficial to you to post which package you are trying to install so we can help you find another Slackware-friendly package. I would usually post links like slackbuilds.org, slacky.eu, rworkman's repo, Alien Bob's repo and (cautiously) linuxpackages.net; however, I don't have the time to write a nice detailed reply right now.

For Pete's sake, don't do that. There are enough lost newbies already doing it. We don't want no more.

ROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Jeebizz 11-10-2008 01:49 PM

I think things would have been a little different if he were trying to install an RPM, since Slackware does have support for that, as well as rpm2tgz. Oh well.
