TRouble configuring Ethernet card
 
I'm using Slackware 10.2, 2.4.31 kernel. I have a Realtek RTL8139 network card. Whenever I try to load the 8139too module with the modprobe command, I get a segmentation fault error. Without the module, I can not access the Internet. I noticed another Slackware 10.2 user on the HCL indicated this card is not very compatible with Linux. Has anyone successfully configured and got the card working on Slackware 10.2? Can you tell me how, or do I need to replace it with a more compatible card? If the last option, can you suggest one that you have had good experiences with?

Me. Now I'm using 2.6.13 but I'm quit possitive I have loaded the module many times with 2.4.31.

my lspci output is:

00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
isn't this the same card?
Have you compiled any external modules?
I remember compiling the lm_sensors module with 2.4.31 and then having segmentation faults with other modules like bt858

I am not sure if it is exactly the same. I tried loading the 8139cp module too, and modprobe said the 8139c+ chipset is not compatible. The exact name it shows under hardware in Windows is "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC."


I haven't compiled any external modules. I haven't done anything to the operating system at all since installation.

I checked on the HCL, and no, it is a different card.

Are there any modules that would have to be loaded before 8139too for it to work? I have gotten Internet working on a couple LiveCD distributions of Linux (but they did not have SATA support, which makes it useless in the long run for me), so it (the card) will work in some cases, at least.

I use 2.4.29 slackware 10.1.
If i insert a realtek 8139 card three modules are loaded, 8139too, crc32 and mii. Be careful, i am having trouble to get a second lan card going (see my post in the networking forum) so I dont know if these are correct modules, but i thought i let you know.

I'm having similar problems, but had success with mandrake 10.1 (or .2) and it used the driver 8139too
