tried to update kernel

I have slackware 10.1 .. tried to update the kernel by installpkg on those 3 tgz files in the cd2 in the testing folder, i think it was the generic, header, and modules.. had some problems.. so i tried the source and set it up to support sata by checking it in the config.. got that all setup ran lilo.. and reboot and i get this error at boot up..

VFS: Cannot open root device "802" or unknown-block(8,2)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block(8,2)

any idea on how to fix this and get 2.6.10 kernel working on slackware?

i was updating from the 2.4.29

Technically you shouldnt have installed the header, just source, kernel, and modules. Also you need to make an initrd -> ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar.../README.initrd

Also, you didn't remove the previous kernel did you?

First, make sure the kernel, kernel modules, and mkinitrd package are
installed (the current version numbers might be a little different, so
this is just an example):

installpkg kernel-generic-2.6.10-i486-1.tgz
installpkg kernel-modules-2.6.10-i486-1.tgz
installpkg mkinitrd-1.0.1-i486-1.tgz

ok this is in the readme... but that mkinitrd-1.0.1-i486.tgz isnt on cd2 in the folder with the others... so how do i install that..

Everything you need to use to make the initrd should already be on Slackware 10.1 if you did a full install. When I did this on my 10.1 install I simply installed the kernel and followed the following on my reiserfs install:
Code:
# cd /boot
# mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.10 -m reiserfs
# pico /etc/lilo.conf

Made lilo.conf look like:

image = /boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.10
  initrd = /boot/initrd.gz
  root = /dev/hda1
  label = Slackware
  read-only

# lilo -C /etc/lilo.conf

yes ive ran lilo and my config looks similar to yours..

image = /boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.10
initrd = /boot/initrd.gz
root = /dev/sda2
label = Linux
read-only

and i've tried without the initrd= and i tried the /boot/vmlinuz still get kernel panic
