trashed my system, please help me find out why or how to fix it
So, I posted a little while ago about depmod not working...I got anxious, and thought I would see if recompiling my kernel would help. I've always been looking for an excuse to recompile my kernel, since I've never done it, so now must've been the right time. I followed the example that was listed in forum. I looked through the menuconfig and disabled a couple of things that I thought I didn't need. I left mostly all modules as modules. However, I encountered an error upon doing make modules_install. It said something about pcmcia cards and depmod, so I figured "hey I don't have anything that uses pcmcia cards" and I commented it out in the makefile. After that, make modules_install worked fine. So I rebooted and tried the new kernel...nothing happened. lilo said "loading vmlinuz......" or whatever it says and then my screen blanked and nothing appeared...I waited and waited, and still nothing. I had saved my old kernel, so I tried to load that one next. It loaded, but none of the modules would load at boot time. I think this has something to do with me doing make modules_install. Upon booting, the kernel complained about the modules not existing and insmod would failed. I checked the path to the modules and they existed. I could load them myself, but I dont remember every single module that needed to be loaded so it was kinda useless....so anyway, that's the state that I'm at. No GIANT loss really, actually probably more of a learn from my mistakes type thing. So if anyone has any input on why it happened or if I could fix it, it would be greatly appreciated.
all of my modules are still present and in the same locations, still insmod fails to load any of them on bootup...I used to have a problem with hotplug where it said that they didn't get loaded but they got loaded anyway...so maybe i'll try messing with hotplug. I tried taking the bare.i kernel from my slack cd, but no avail. insmod still fails.
well, i don't know if i can go further, the only thing that i could think of checking is to make sure that your lilo.conf file is correct in all its parameters and then check the /etc/rc.d directory and check the scripts to make sure those are alright
worst comes worst, boot slackware second cd and go into its true live mode and mount your slack partition, backup data, and then the million dolar word: reinstall
if u can't get slackware's original live cd to boot, try the custom slack live cd at www.slackware-live.org or get knoppix (both are purely live cd-distros)
*edit: was just reading another post and it seems that making a new kernel will overwrite your old modules, so that could also be a problem
