I see a line in dmesg or /var/log/messages

Code:
Jan 24 13:32:18 greatdemonslayer kernel: Memory: 2040788k/2079744k available (2940k kernel code, 1792k absent, 37164k reserved, 1256k data, 416k init)
Code:
bash-4.1$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2041216 394244 1646972 0 200 187996
-/+ buffers/cache: 206048 1835168
Swap: 1048572 0 1048572
It looks like this is a good way to find out available memory before it is claimed.
