The installer is not a problem - I'm installing on another beefier computer. I looked at a few other distros. Some come with tor precompiled (Tiny Core for instance) but I think updating Tor would be a similar pain. What reason is there to try a newer Slackware rather than a newer Debian? I'm more familiar with apt-get.

The latest libevent requires a newer kernel. Should I update the kernel, try debian with latest kernel or try an older libevent (and if yes, which?)

For vintage projects you could try NetBSD, which has a relatively small footprint (i386 base.tgz is abount 25 MB packed / 74 MB unpacked). A recent libevent (2.0) package and tor are available for this OS.

I concur with gnashly, because it's a pentium you should be able to install Debian or Slackware, but the amount of RAM (28MB you said?) is likely to be a problem.

Yes, this is strange as 4.0 was the first version I purchased/used. The first Linux distro for me, too.

I once purchased a distro as well - Xandros. I was a beta tester and felt guilty I didn't do my job :)
I'm trying Debian right now, will report results later. The install is so advanced, it lets me install by SSH :)

Here's a Q: since I'm using a P4 to install but then I'll be moving the HD to the P1, would the kernel be a P4 kernel? If yes, how could I use a kernel for a P1 / i586? Would I be able to use the kernel image from BasicLinux / Slackware in Debian (which I know is for Pentium 1)?

Thank you for this suggestion. I'll try Debian first, and if I hit a roadblock, I'll give NetBSD a go.
