I think when you see eventually how Slackware works, you actually create your own repository that you sometimes release back to the public that enhance packages from the distribution, but aren't necessarily required for functionality.

However, in general anything from SBo, stays from SBo, as really by then there's no need for rehashing.

I noticed while installing Slackware that, indeed, i spent half the time compiling stuff i wanted. So, recent Slackware-user question: if you build most of your stuff from source, why prefer Slackware over Gentoo (not trying to cause a flamewar)?

First off, I don't build most of my stuff from source. I have somewhere around 50 packages, most of which are compiled from source, that are not from the base Slackware installation (mostly from SBo). Did you really build 1000+ third-party packages from source? Second: stability. I believe Gentoo uses essentially a rolling-release model, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

For the much more stable, well-tested stock install.

Also, the amount of compiling you do on Slackware is a lot less than on Gentoo. Especially since Alien Bob (http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/) provides prebuilt binary packages for things like Chromium, FFMPEG, LibreOffice, VLC, Wine and WebKitGTK. You use slackpkg+ to install updates to his packages.

Where's the option "I'm running my own third party repository"? :D

Package repos generally grow faster than one would guess.

Code:

[kikinovak@alphamule:~] $ find Public/ -name '*.t?z' | wc -l
1293

Cheers,

Niki

Oh, no doubt one can do that, but I think for the purposes of a Slackware vs. Gentoo discussion we wouldn't assume that most users would. In Gentoo, everything is compiled from source. In Slackware, almost all of what a typical user would need is already available in the form of pre-built packages.

Create your own fscking thread if you want to ask something.

Indeed, there's no need to dig up a 10 year old thread just to ask, "why Slackware and not Gentoo"?
