My understanding of the triple-core processors is they are quad-core processors with one core that failed to meet specifications. Rather than scrap the whole processor, AMD pseudo-disabled the out of specification core and sold them.
I say pseudo-disabled, because there are HOWTO's on the ARPANet for re-enabling the fourth core. Of course, since it didn't meet specifications, you don't know what you're getting yourself into until you're into it.
