Thinkpad Lenovo T61
Hi
I've got a problem with instalation slack 11 on my laptop thinkpad T61. 1.System crushed after I installed kernel modules package, so I'm guessing that it's some kind of incompatibility with some modules 2. wireless card doesn't work (Intel WiFi Link 4965 AGN ) Anyone can help me with that ? Thx |
Mind providing more info on #1, like what kernel you are using, and what modules you installed and how ?
Do you see your wireless card here: http://linux-wless.passys.nl/query_p...randname=Intel If not, then you may need to use ndiswrapper, assuming that supports it. |
Hi
1. Kernel 2.6.18 with kernel modules from testing directory 2. No, there is no such card, i'll try ndiswrapper and we'll see 3. Could you give me some good links about trackpoint & touchpad thx |
That's strange. I don't see any reason for the system to mess up after you install kernel modules, as long as they were the right modules for the right kernel. Did you give you any error messages, or anything ?
For your card, see #72 here: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/j...,33/id,list_a/ is that your card, if so then ndiswrapper may just work. "Could you give me some good links about trackpoint & touchpad " What does that mean ? Your touchpad is not working ? Try 'xorgsetup', it may just detect it. Assuming you installed the kernel modules ... back to #1 ... |
Bad news:

I just installed Slackware on a Thinkpad T60 - and every little detail works flawlessly. While I realize the T61 is slightly newer with later models, it's based mostly on Intel hardware which has excellent Linux support. Looking to Debian et al descriptions on what works and what doesn't is slightly misleading, as these guides normally only cover the basis of core debian, and not the full extend of Linux capabilities.
As for your kernel worries - have you tried booting a kernel that works (ie an old 2.4 for instance) to get started, and then use that as a basis for building your own from kernel.org? On my Lenovo Thinkpad T60 I run the latest 2.6.22rc5 because it has the mac80211 wireless stack build-in. Which brings me to your point number two. Visit http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/ and download iwlwifi and the firmware for your wireless card. It works very well indeed (except the LED isn't activated - big deal!). I have a SlackBuild for it that I can email you separately if you'd like. If you have specific problems with your T61 after following these steps, I suggest you report back with lspci -vv so we can see the hardware. Maybe I should also send you my kernel .config file that you can use as a basis for building your own kernel. Send me an email (yallaone account with google's email) if you want the SlackBuild and my kernel .config and we'll get you started with flawless Linux on your T61. PS. While on the subject of Slackware on T61 - Remember to use evdev drivers rather than the old mouse drivers in Xorg - works better with the TrackPoint! -y1 |
Hello again,
I just sent you my SlackBuild and kernel config on email as it's too big to fit in this forum. However, if you need further assistance, please continue using this thread so that others might participate and learn from it. Thanks, -y1 |
Hi
Thanks for help, I'm gettinng right on it. I'll let you know how it goes. Thx |
Hi
Well, something is wrong 1. alsa is working but there is no sound 2. iwconfig no wireless extension 3. F1, F2, F3,itp doesn't work on KDE 4. Can you post your xorg config Quote:
|
For sound, run either 'alsamixer' or 'aumix' and unmute the sound.
Did you install ndiswrapper as well as the intel driver for your wireless card ? What does '3. F1, F2, F3,itp doesn't work on KDE' mean ? If you have problems with xorg, run 'xorgsetup', it will likely generate a very good possible config ... with a little editing, it will become the best config. |
aumix doesn't help at all, and sound is unmuted.
That meens that I can't view or edit or copy anythind on "mc" for example, F1 - F5 dont work, xorgsetup doesn't make any better thx |
Looks like you've got plenty of 'unknown devices', I bet one of them is a sound card. Do you happen to know what sound card you have ?
And did you install the kernel modules ? |

Yes I did |
oh, there it is. Can you post the output of 'lsmod' (see if module is loaded). If it is, try running 'alsaconf'.
