think to install slack 9.1, but dual boot??
 

Hello,

As I can't solve my tkinter modules & new python version problems on my redhat 9 I think to install slackware 9.1

The point is that i need win2k to browse because my dsl modem has no linux driver...

...The dual boot with NT system seems particularly tricky according to the 7.1 info, is that the same with the 9.1 ?

Is that ok installing xemacs (redhat furnished it in the pack) or missing-libraires problems will drive me crazy ?

there is no problem ;) slack 9.1 is perfect with dual booting,it recognizes the win partition and adds in the lilo automatic ;) I had no problem with dual booting ;)

I don't have any problem multibooting Slack 9.1 / Win2K pro / Win98SE. I use the NT bootloader to boot everything and it works great.

Basically, make sure that you install Linux last with lilo (easiest to configure), loading lilo to the primary drive's MBR and making sure it boots immediatley without waiting, then copy the MBR to a 512 byte file that the NT loader can use. After that, restore the MBR so that Windows can use it (ie., 'fdisk /mbr'), and enter the appropriate line in BOOT.INI.

Please find my "Quick Slack dual istallation HOWTO" below. It has been writen for instruction of post graduated students and professional engineers. Please try to use it and give me your feed back.

Before the Slackware installation commence, it have to be decide if you should have a single-boot (Slackware only) or a dual-boot (Slackware and Windows) installation on your machine. If you want the workstation for general applications, a dual-boot installation is to be recommended. In such case is the installation procedure:

1.Partition by means of fdisk
2.Installation of Windows
3.Installation of Slackware Linux

At single installation of a 40 GB Hard disk I'm using following partition set up:
Partition: hda1 Reifers 2 GB /
Partition: hda2 Reifers 18 GB /home
Partition: hda2 Reifers 18 GB /usr
Partition: hda4 swap (2xRAM, max 2 GB)

At dual boot of a 40 GB Hard disk I'm using following partition set up:
Partition: hda1 NTFS 2 GB
Partition: hda2 Reifers 2 GB /
Partition: hda3 NTFS 10 GB
Partition: hda4 Reifers 10 GB /home
Partition: hda5 Reifers 10 GB /usr
Partition: hda6 swap (2xRAM, max 2 GB)

At installation of Slackware I'm selecting "full Install everything (up to 2GB)" as it is an easy way to install all necessary packages and hard disk space should not be a problem on a workstation. Un
I have experienced the best result will be achieved with the expert alternative at Lilo configuration. Lilo should be installed in MBR, Master Boot Record.

I've a siemens santis 10.

As it's a globespan modem, the driver located at http://eciadsl.flashtux.org/index.php should work.

But it doesn't, a developper of this group wrote me they have to adapt the written driver testing the modem. It seems that siemens or globespan don't intend to share some tech. infos.

...so i'm waiting.
