The time and effort a skimming through CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT can save.

Hi:

Slackware 14.0 gave me microscopic characters, by default, when in the text consoles. According to CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT I included

append="video=800x600@60"

in lilo.conf, but not before I made dozens of tests and wrote some hundred posts. Now the screen can be descently read. HOwever I want to have 80x25 characters in the screen. What would be the corresponding resolution at 60Hz vertical refresh rate? I guess it depends on the dot frequency, doesn't it?

OK. Where can I get some information and tutorials regarding this stuff? Anyone knows? All I need is some formula which relates those variables.

What's your video card? What is the output of the following command:

Code:
# lspci | grep -i vga
Cheers,

Niki

You are my savior. I wasn't careful when reading that file:

Now that KMS (Kernel Mode Setting) for graphics cards has (mostly) stabilized,
it is enabled by default for intel, ati, and nvidia graphics chipsets. It
is possible to disable it use "nomodeset" as a kernel append in lilo.conf,
but Xorg will not work at all on intel (and some ati) chips if you do that.
I thought: if I do the nomodeset thing, as my CPU is intel, then according to the text, I won't be able to run X. Your words, however, made see the text merely says "not work at all on intel chips.

What chip is he speaking about, said I. Which forced meto read from a bit above in the text. The graphics chip or graphics processor!!! And may be I do not have an Intel GPU!

It seems I don't. For I did the nomodeset trick and now my worries are all gone. Thanks once again.

P.S.: But what if I had had an Intel GPU? Eh??? I see all this as willingness to annoy simple people like me, who is happy just writing their tiny programs and do not give a xxxx about the web and multimedia (save to get in touch with people from LQ, which I can do by other means).

It's an onboard video card, a chipset or subset of a chipset that is an integral part of the motherboard (MB). I have not been able, yet, to get the MB manual, though I do not think the MB manufacturer gives the chip part number or other means of identification.
Code:
root@darkstar:~# lspci|grep -i vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
root@darkstar:~#
It was Intel after all. Thanks for your kind reply.
