Just solved it.
A clean install of 10.2 worked, so I compared installed packages from my "current" machines and found that aspell_en was still only at 0.51 when 10.2 uses 6.0.0.
Upgraded to the latest aspell_en from "L" and now I can enter text.
The spell checker was locking up with a mismatch between aspell and aspell_en versions.

Upgrading the aspell wordlist (aspell-en) fixed the issue. Although, I had to force swaret to install it
swaret --install aspell-en
because it was not recognizing it as needing to be upgraded.
