tar output file ownership wrong

"current", seen with both 2.4.32 and 2.6.16.22 kernels
Running tar zxvf on a knowledgetree,gz archive as "root"
I find the directory structure created is ausername:1006
Previously I have seen anumber:anothernumber
After I chmod -R root:root everything is right again

the files you extracted were given the permission of a user/group you don't have on your system, so the uid/gid are displayed instead. Follow the directiond of the previous poster to resolve.
