Right click on the panel > Add to panel > Notification area

I had this problem in SuSE. I went to move my system tray and it disappeared. All I had to do was right click the panel, select "Add to Panel" -> Applet -> System Tray... and there it was!

By the way... I was also in KDE, not sure what the equivalent is in gnome.

The latest version of Dropline GNOME is only supported in Slackware 10.2 it MAY work with earlier versions, but there is no guarantee. Same goes for "current".

Having said that, are you talking about the area that displays the time and date, or running programs? If it is the latter just click on the bar and select "Add to Panel" and then "Notification Area".
