system memory still at 504 after video card install

I installed an MSI nvidia FX 5200 card but my system memory is still at 504MB when it should be 512 .. I'm convinced I compiled my kernel wrong and left in the Intel graphics driver... but I thought I had removed it when I updated my kernel

my driver are 7667 and it is a little sluggish when I start xfce, (it stalls after the splash screen and I can't open any menus although I can move my mouse) .. in kinfocenter under openGL -> 3D accelation and kernel module it says unknown. I'm not sure if this is normal or not or if that has anything to do with it

anyone know what options to set so as not to use the built intel graphics?

Is there a bios switch to turn off the memory sharing?

I really thought you were on to something when I saw "VGA controller" in the BIOS, but kinfocenter still reports 504MBs of RAM :(

There must be an option in the bios to set the size of video shared memory. Just hunt in the bios for that, or if you can give the motherboard's model number someone can probably help you with that little problem.

Although this thread appears to be a continuation of a separate thread which I have to admit I have not read, I think you xfce menu problem is a "feature" of xfce and not a memory problem. One of the reasons I switched from xfce to fluxbox was that the newer versions seem to take an inordinately long time to load the menus. I would often right click several times in the root window before I finally got my menus.

If I have misunderstood the problem, please point me to your earlier posts on this problem.

My computer is a compaq 4403US so the BIOS has little or no functionality .. awhile ago I considered flashing it with an Intel BIOS but I was not confident enough that I had the exact chipset/config as the intel board

the freeze only happens when I first start xfce. as soon as it loads up it's fine, and only occured once I installed my graphics card so it is not xfces fault... I'm thinking it may just be a quirk of the nvidia drivers . although I couldn't get the nvidia module to load until I did cp /boot/config-2.6.12.3 /usr/src/linux/.config ... could it be I don't have system.map and vmlinuz in /usr/src/linux? i'm thinking no...

but it puzzles me that there should be 8MBs missing .. the i815 chipset uses 4MBs of RAM ... weird

when I load up xfce w/ startxfce4, then press crtl alt F1 .. I see the following messages in the console:

attempt to put segment in horiz list twice (it keeps repeating this and when it stops I can use xfce)

and some cryptic message that says glib critical hash insert ... but it goes by too fast for me to read it, does anyone know where the log file is so I can read it? and possible figure out what to fix?
