I installed Slack 12.1 and the system is freezing. It is a hard freeze and not just the display because I cannot ssh to it and an active ssh session from another computer freezes as well. I guess it must be hardware (memory, HD, MB). I have yet to see a freeze when using a LiveCD (Slax), while the system freezes relatively quickly when booting the installed system.
Is there a way to test the HD other than fsck (which passes fine)? Thanks, Brian |
Hi,
If it is hdd then get the manufactures diagnostic disk to test the drive. I still suspect memory or even PSU. Minimal load with a Livecd. Try the load to RAM option and see what happens with the Livecd. |
memtest86 ran for about 12 hours with no errors. I found a program called smartctl to test the HD, and it reported no errors either. Next step is to get a volt meter and I'm going to swap out the HD, see if it makes a difference.

Did you try the apic-related boot options (noapic and/or nolapic)?
|

Hi,
Brian, download 'UBCD Ultimate Boot CD', it contains a lot of diagnostic tools that you might find useful. Another good tool is 'SystemRescueCd'. These links and others can be found at 'Slackware-Links'. More than just SlackwareŽ links! What bothers me is that you state that 'Slax' will run from cd. If a swap is on the hdd, then slax will use it. You could go to the hdd manufactures site and download the diagnostic set for the hdd. I would trust those. Some of the diagnostics are on the UBCD that I referenced above. |
