system beeping
 

once and a while, when serfing the net, mostly when my kids
are using a java or flash site my system beeps from the internal
computer speaker not the extenal speakers. Then while ripping a cd,
using lame as the encoder, it started beeping like a european police
car, I could not get it to stop, finely I cut the wire to the speaker.
what causes this and how do I correct it?

Don t know why it is beeping, but if your kernel is compiled with the speaker as a module, if you unload the module it will be unable to beep. The module can be removed with:
rmmod pcspkr
The kernel can also be compiled without any support for the speaker.

Heh, but still doesn't explain the source of the beeps..

I'm not sure but you could have muted sound from the pc speaker using KMix or GNOME volume control.

Thanks for the suggestions, I cut the wire so I don't get the beep,
but there has to be a reason it was doing it to begin with. I thought
it had to do with my firewall and somekind of cookie trying to send
messages out while it was a net issue, but ripping a cd, and encoding it?
There went that therory.....

My computer did this once too, it was becuase I set my "CPU Overheat warning tone" to too low a temperature in my BIOS. It was easy to fix, I just made it a slightly higher value.
But that might not be what's wrong with your's, just a suggestion.

Thanks it makes a lot of sense. the CPU was maxed while trying to rip
and encode at the same time.

Uncomment the line:
set bell-style none
in /etc/inputrc

^^ this is how to stop the beep. As for what the beeps mean, you have to know which BIOS you are running. Look up the beep codes via Google. That may tell you why you are getting the beeps.
