Swaret Updating
Hi :)
I recently noticed a reference to a program called Swaret on the site here. What this application does is keeps your Slackware system up to date! Great idea, great tool, huge thanks to those who mentioned it and to the developer of course. Ok, so.. I'm basically just wondering how bad my system is going to break if I update glibc and gcc using slackpacks, if I'm running: glibc-2.2.5 And the upgrade is: glibc-2.3.2 GCC: 2.95 Upgrade: gcc-3.2.3 Overall it's: slackware 8.1 ===> Slackware Current All using swaret --update Anybody have any major insight, or ideas on bad things to expect? Cool |
Im no expert when it comes to linux, but a jump that big....just sounds like trouble waiting to happen....
you'll probably have to redo all your programs (outside of swaret of course) that's just an insite of a layman though. im sure a guru could make it sound cooler.:p |
Thanks for the reply :)
I've read about doing it in the Swaret FAQ, so it's at least been done before. I'm just not too sure how bad things will be afterwards ;) Just looking for some ideas on what to expect to fix, and hoping it won't be 'everything'. :) Cool |
do it for science :D

:D
Why do we break our systems? To learn! :D Ok, I just might give it a go this weekend, if I do, I'm sure I'll report back ;) Cool |
Expect weirdness. I did the same thing (8.1 -> current) when I first stumbled onto swaret and I ended up re-installing. But hey, it was a good excuse to move to 9.0! I found a thread somewhere here in the Slackware forum (from Aussie, I think) that said the binaries from the two different versions of gcc are incompatible.
If I had been a bit more experienced, I probably would have been able to back out of the "upgrade" more gracefully than re-installing the whole thing, but oh well. If I were you, I'd keep a list of the packages I upgrade and know where your 8.1 CD is in case you have to "downgrade" :D . |
There shouldn't be any problems...
Worse comes to worse you can still use pkgtool to remove them. I've used swaret with no problems. |
Cool, thanks for the additional input :)
I'll likely tackle this bad boy later on this week/weekend. Wish me luck, although if I get stuck, wish me MUCH MORE than luck, something like a coma might be in order :D Cool |
