Swaret Questions, trying to get it right this time
Hello
Recently i tried out swaret (before i had been fine without, but i wanted to keep upto date. however, i updgraded to current from 10, and this is where hell broke loose, I had a lot of problems with things not working (most seeming ly attribuited to libc) the rollback feature hosed my install (i'm not sure if this was my fault or not) and for some reason vim vanished utterly, more may have done the same, but vim is the one i noticed most. I trieda gain after a reinstall (and this time i partitioned all my main folders off seperately, which i should have done before, but as it was my first install i didn't) i tried again, this time with a fresh install (almost) and again i had similar problems, in the first one i had used linux packages, in the second one i used purely slack-current. this was about a week ago, sincethen i have ben attempting to sort it out exactly the way l like it again, but would like to try to upgrade one more. on a forum i read that i should change the deproot to this: Quote:
and some one else reccomened this: Quote:
lookinga this thread i foudn on a adifferent forum, the advice above looks sound should that work? and other tips? or should i try slapt-get (no flamewars please) also, i have no gnome or kde on this (self compiled fluxbox devel) as 1, idon't use them and 2. i don't have cd burner with me, and i left the cd at home (i'm at university) so i onlt have disk 1, using swaret or slapt get is there a wa to install gnome/kde for the libs etc? or would i have to hand download and install them myself? thanks for the help, i;m mostly competent, but i still slip ip sometimes, and so far i find the people on this forum mainly helpful. i did rtfm, but andi don't think i missed anything. cheers -0- |

Swaret works good, used in conjunction with the slackware change log: http://www.slackware.com/changelog/current.php?cpu=i386 and some reading/patience/common sence. Things tend to go wrong when people just upgrade everything without thinking and researching 1st. As far as getting KDE - hit the KDE mirror ftps: http://mirrors.isc.org/pub/kde/stabl...lackware/10.0/ First, I made of backup of /opt/kde just in case, removed all kde*, koffice, qt, & arts via pkgtool. Then I copied the entire 10.0 directory from the ftp, entered it, and just did a: installpkg * . That got me kde up and running. Hope this gives you some ideas. -tw p.s. The only "DEP_ROOT"'s that I have uncommented are: DEP_ROOT=http://www.swaret.org/swaret DEP_ROOT=ftp://ftp.swaret.org/swaret I do not use sourceforge as you mentioned above. Nor do I use LinuxPackages as a repository. Wish I could tell you that I upgraded 10, THEN switched to current as you mentioned above, but that was as while ago. I don't remember - but I am on current now. |
