Swap size not visible in system monitor

I'm using kernel 2.6.6 with no problems but I just started system monitor in Gnome and saw that the size of swap is 0 bytes ! instead of 1GB. This information was well displayed in kernel 2.4.*.
Also in the list of devices, swap is not listed.

Lastly, in my /etc/rc.d directory, i have 2 copies of each rc.* file. One with the extention .new and the other without. The ones with extention .new have a fairly recent date whiles those without are quite old. Is it safe to delete the old ones ?

Try running free from the terminal. It will show you your memory usage and swap usage. I'm not sure if swap would be listed in the list of devices (or what you mean exactly). It should be showing in your /etc/fstab file, though. BTW, I don't think anybody needs that much swap. If you have 512-1024MB of DDR, it's likely you're not even using swap (I know I almost never am).

Take a look at gkrellm program.
